So if you paid attention to my logo and blog title, you noticed that I call myself a “model scholar”. Well that is because in addition to pursuing my PhD in Social Work, I also participate in pageants and do some occasional modeling. I feel that both of these aspects of my life are important to me. One is my livelihood and the other is my escape. I feel that as a Social Worker interested in violence and trauma , the work that I do can get really heavy, and in order to take care of myself mentally and physically, I do mainly two things not related to school- work out and pageants/modeling. We all have our niches and this just so happens to be mine. It was pretty random how I got involved in pageants about three years ago, but I am glad that I stumbled upon this activity. Pageantry allows me to escape from the business and craziness that is my life. I can dress up and wear high heels, go on stage, represent me and feel confident.
It also gives me a purpose. In pageantry, you select a platform, which is a cause or idea that you are passionate about. Many pageant queens will then spend their reign completing projects or community service opportunities around their platform. Those of you who know me know that I am passionate about mentorship and being a role model for younger girls in my community. I want to show them that anything is possible if they work hard. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have people in my family, at my church and at school that I could look up too and reach out to for support. I believe that is one factor that is crucial for success, and I want to provide that for girls who may not have it.
Being a part of pageants has also given me another community of friends. Through pageantry, I have met girls and women from all over the country, from all walks of life, and I enjoy the friendships that have been cultivated out of participating in these pageants.
My most recent venture is that I am Miss Massachusetts Captivating 2019, which is part of the national Captivating Pageants, and will take place in September 2019. This will be my second time competing-the first time I placed 4th Runner Up. You can follow my journey to the competition by liking my facebook page Miss Massachusetts Captivating 2019 or following my instagram missmacaptivating19 .Check out the website here. I love this system because the motto is simple: Be You, which is what I plan to do always. Being me is the best thing that I could do for myself because there will never be anyone like me.
